Washu Chocolate is born out of Proyecto Washu, a NGO focusing on research and conservation of the ecosystem of El Choco, in Ecuador. In order to produce the chocolate, farmers receive money according to the amount of cacao they produce, part of the work of Proyecto Washu is to find direct buyers who are willing to pay fair prices for the cacao, acknowledging the high quality of the product and the efforts farmers are doing to protect the remaining forest in their farms. Proyecto Washu is also providing workshops to help them improve the production of their crops organically, which in future will represent a bigger income for the families. Washu Chocolate pays a fair price for the cacao. The cocoa is organic and certified by ECOCERT.
55% of the profits at present fund Proyecto Washu research and the team, however once the costs of Washu Chocolate have been recovered, all the profits will go towards the research and conservation. If you wish to purchase the chocolate (milk or 75% cocoa) you can contact the team directly through Washu Chocolate Facebook page.
